Yes, He Really Did Spend His Kid’s College Fund On A Vette
Phil McCormick took best in show at the 2021 Corvettes at Carlisle event and that offered him a prime location at the 2022 show where I got to see his beautiful 1969 Corvette Stingray in all its glory. When I asked him my standard “What’s the story” question, he responded with a doozie. He bought the car with his daughter’s college fund!
True story! Granted it didn’t affect her pursuit of higher education, mind you. She qualified for some scholarships to study meteorology and atmospheric science. So, Phil now had this pile of money, and he knew exactly what he wanted to do with it. He found this second year C3 in Washington State. He bought it sight-unseen and flew out with his brother to drive the Vette cross-country back to Mechanicsburg, PA!
“I drive the car. It’s never trailered,” he proudly acknowledges as we chatted in the early morning of day two at the 2022 Corvettes at Carlisle. It’s a numbers-matching 427 ci/390 hp backed by an M21 four-speed and finished in LeMans Blue. One of the unique features of the car are the wire wheels. They are said to be original to the car and a rare option. So rare, that when he lost a center cap, he had a hard time finding an exact replacement. “Don’t look too closely. One of these things is not like the others!” he smiled.
